Your Success, Your Choice
When I work with clients in my coaching practice, one of the very first questions that I ask them is, "What is the vision that you have for your life?" Invariably, they will answer with something like, "I want to be financially stable, have healthy relationships and be happy." As wonderful as this sounds, it's not a vision. This kind of thinking is not going to get you what you want simply because it fails to state specifically what you are looking for. How much money does it take to be financially stable? How do you know if your relationships are healthy or not? How will you know when you've achieved happiness.
So before you set out to change your life, you must first decide what it is that you truly want. One easy way to do that is simply to make as long a list as you can make of all the specific things that you would like to be, do and have. Think big. Stretch the limits of your imagination and reach for things that currently feel like they are out of your realm of possibility. The purpose of a vision is to push you outside of your comfort zone and inspire you to reach towards seemingly impossible dreams.
The bigger your vision, the bigger you will have to become in order to make it a reality. A well crafted vision is the very thing that will motivate you to become the type of person who is worthy of such an outcome. Martin Luther King, Jr. had to think beyond the limits of the possible to dream of a nation where there was no prejudice and John F. Kennedy had to reach far into his imagination to dream of putting a man on the moon.
Do you have a powerful and inspiring vision for your life? If not, here are some guidelines for creating one Visions are detailed descriptions of what you want to create. When I say detailed what I mean is that it needs to be both specific and measurable. It is not enough to say that you want financial stability. How much money do you want to make per year/per month? Are you talking about your net worth or your monthly cash flow? Does this stability include savings and investments? If so, what kind and how much? By when do you want to have accomplished this? It is absolutely crucial that your vision be specific and clearly defined. This gives you clear targets which allow you to see precisely what you will have to do to reach them. Your vision needs to push you beyond what you think is possible. If you can easily see how you will accomplish the vision that you've created for yourself, then you haven't really created anything.
